Problems with changing toner cartridges on my brother MFC 9840 CDW

Yesterday I had some problems with my brother laser printer.  My toner cartridge run out and the message flashed up toner life end.  I got out my new brother toner cartridge change it, but nothing changed the message still appeared and would not allow me to print.

So I called brother in the UK and asked what advice they could give, they asked  me if I was installing an original toner cartridge, I replied that it was a remanufactured cartridge which I have bought from a reputable firm and have used before (please note these cost 40% of the price compared to original brother cartridges).  The gentlemen then took great pleasure in informing me that there was no way to remove the toner life end message - unless I bought a genuine brother toner cartridge, something to do with the gear on the remanufactured cartridge not being reset and only an engineer can re set the gears on a cartridge.

I pointed out to the gentleman that buying 4 original colour cartridges for my printer would nearly equal the price I had paid for the printer (and a new printer would come with 4 cartridges) - so why would I do that.

I also explained that this is the second cartridge of this type I had installed and there is definitely a way to reset the printer (my husband rang brother in France last time and they ask you to go through some checks before sending out an engineer - which re set the printer - but I didn't write this info down).

Before trying out my French on Brother France, I googled a little bit and came up with some very interesting information.

Not only did I find the information on resetting my printer, I also discovered that most of the time when brother printers tell you they are low on toner or even out of toner, they are not!  Some people have actually printed another 1000 copies before receiving the low toner message again.

So guess what I put my old toner cartridge back in the machine - followed the reset instructions below, and voila the printer is printing again no problems and no difference to the print quality at all.

From what I read on this website, the machines estimates the amount it uses, this is just a way to make you buy more toner!!

One word of caution though keep an eye on the print quality and if you feel it is starting to suffer than that would be the time to considering changing the toner.

I have detailed out the instructions below on how to reset your printer **obviously like me it is your choice where you decide to follow these instructions - I am in no way liable if anything happens to your printer, I am just passing on the information (please visit this website for more information). Although I can confirm this is what Brother France told us to do 6 months ago, when we changed the first cartridges and the "Toner Life End" message would not disappear.

I have a Brother MFC 9840CDW.

1. Turn on the printer

2. Push the button on the front of the printer to open the cartridge door. Don't remove the cartridges.

3. Push the Clear/Back button to bring up a reset menu. There are 8 different toner functions (for simplicity, two B's, two C's, two M's, and two Y's).

4. For each of these eight functions in turn, push the O.K. button and then push it again to indicate 'Reset'. After a few seconds, it will say 'Accepted' and will then display a message that the cover is open.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each of the 8 toner functions.

6. When finished, close the door and the status bar will be reset to normal with no error message.

** If you have a different model the buttons to use are cancel button and then reprint button this will bring up the reset menu.
