Frequently asked questions
Must I have a survey?
Strictly speaking no, however, you are probably making a significant financial investment and from my own experience the term "liveable" in France, is sometimes a term that can stretch the most vivid imaginations.
What types of survey are available?
A full range of inspections are available, the most common being the Homebuyers Report (HBR) and the Building Survey.
The main difference is the style of reporting, the inspections will basically be the same, however, whilst the HBR deals with items in a more general manner (for example treating the walls as a whole etc), and only reports on matters that are significant, the Building Survey is far more in depth reporting on the property room by room.
What will the survey cover?
This obviously depends upon the type of survey required. Both the Home Buyers Report and Building Survey will concentrate on the following:
- Roof
- Walls
- Rainwater installation
- External joinery
- Roofspace
- Dampness
- Floors
- Ceilings
- Fireplaces
How long will it take to produce the survey report?
This will depend upon the access arrangements although once the survey has been carried out; the report will normally take 5 days to produce.
A verbal report will be given to you following the inspection and will highlight any matters that have an urgent or significant effect.
