Description:
Oradour sur Glane serves as a memorial to the hundreds of innocent men, women and children who perished at the hands of the Nazis, on 10 June 1944. 642 people were massacred by troops from the Das Reich division, who were advancing towards Normandy to help repel Allied forces at the D-Day landings. The men were rounded up and shot, whilst the women and children were held captive in a church, which was then set alight. The village has been left as it was after the massacre, and serves as a memorial to the innocents who lost their lives. A modern visitor centre on the opposite side of the road tells the story of the period from 1933 to 1953, from the rise of the Nazis to the destruction and re-building of Oradour, including a detailed accound of the day of the massacre. A tunnel beneath the road links the centre to the actual village, with the Mayors burnt out car still lying in the street, and everyday items left in the buildings as they were on the day.
