Description:
The museum in Brive-la-Gaillarde was founded in 1883. The collections were displayed for just over a century in a historical building in the centre of town, in a street called Docteur Massénat. During the eighties the collection doubled in quantity and in quality.
The original building was too small consequently the museum was transferred to the remarkable Hôtel Labenche, built during the Renaissance, which is one of the most beautiful buildings in the town and listed as a historical monument. 17 permanent galleries, in the form of a large fresque, tell the story of Corrèze people and their environment; 100 000 years on the french territory. It is the only museum in France to possess a prestigious collection of 17th century tapestries made in the Mortlake workshop as well.
In addition, the museum offers to visitors:
* a temporary exhibition gallery,
(5 themes a year)
* a conference room,
* a cultural workshop:
the Cultural Workshop for young people,
whose aim is to initiate a young public to the wealth of cultural heritage through educational visits and hands-on workshops.
