Description:
An 83km long Véloroute linking Crozant in Creuse and the border with Haute Vienne was opened in June 2010, offering cyclists an eco-friendly and sporting way of discovering the local area.
The path, labelled ADRT23, is part of a nationwide project to build high quality cycle paths, within the framework of the Schéma Régional Véloroutes et Voies Vertes (cycle routes and green lanes), which seeks to help develop rural life and non-polluting forms of transport. The project already has 7,000km of accredited cycle paths nationwide.
A first for Limousin, this route crosses the valley of Sédelle, with its arboretum, the ruins of Crozant and on to the Thaurion valley. It takes in the tower of Bridiers, cirque Valdi, the parc de Tancognaguet and the Gartempe valley.
A Véloroute is not just about building and creating new pathways, as it can use existing infrastructure, such as disused railways, quiet country lanes or existing cycle paths. The 83km of Véloroute classified as part of this project uses quiet country lanes, now marked with new signs, 7 separate stopping places (with basic equipment such as benches, dustbins and bike racks), and a Rando Velo point.
Further information on the new Véloroute is available from Les Véloroutes et Voies Vertes de France, or from Creuse Tourism.
