Description:
The row between milk producers and big dairy companies over wholesale milk prices continues to simmer, with Limousin dairy farmers now calling for a boycott of big brands like La vache qui rit (Laughing Cow).
Representatives from the National Federation of Farmers’ Unions (FNSEA) and local producers were on hand last week in the aisles of the Carrefour store at Boisseuil, handing out leaflets urging shoppers to avoid buying brands like Bongrain (products such as Caprice des Dieux, Elle et Vire, Saint-Moret...), Bel (Vache qui Rit, Babybel, Boursin...) and Lactel (Lactel, President, Bridel…).
Producers all over France are pushing for an increase to the price of milk, and the farmers unions have issued an ultimatum to the big companies to get back around the table by 12 August to thrash out an improved deal.
The price of milk is set fixed every three months by a panel of representatives from the unions and big dairy companies, but the two sides are further apart than ever after a disastrous price setting meeting in July. Industrial action could follow if a deal is not done, and some farmers unions are in the process of developing a ‘fair milk’ label, similar in concept to the fair trade brand.
