Description:
TweetArt and crafts experts in Limousin have come together to offer visitors to the region the chance to visit their workshops, as part of the Route des Métiers d’Art du Limousin.
Originally set-up three years ago, the scheme now has 52 workshops opening their doors to the general public, and a new interactive map is available to help visitors plan their own route. Participating workshops are keen to demonstrate their know-how, and talk to visitors about their creations using materials such as wood, porcelain, leather, enamel, metal, paper, textiles, stone and glass.
One of the conditions for artists and craftspeople to join the initiative is that only items made on the premises (or by a partner workshop on the route), are able to be sold to the public. This ensures the authenticity of products.
Many of the workshops are off the beaten track, offering visitors the chance to see some of the towns and villages along the way, although eight of them are situated in and around Limoges. All three departments of Limousin are represented on the map, and the PMA hope to have around 70 workshops participating in 2011.
As well as the interactive map on the PMA (Pôle des Métiers d’Art du Limousin) website, the organisation has created a folding map which is available free from the tourist offices around the region.
