Description:
The Lac de Vassivière is already a major attraction for visitors to Limousin, but the changes for 2011 should make it better than ever, with new ports, better walking paths and improved beach areas.
Officials want the 1000 hectare site to become a visitor destination from April right through to November, with more of the facilities open out of peak season. The two restaurants on the south bank between Vauveix and Broussas will be sold, and will hopefully open for more than the two months per year under the existing arrangements.
Water taxis and the tourist train opened on 2 April this year, and business has been brisk, no doubt helped by the exceptional April weather. Two new ports, at Auphelle and Masgrangeas, join the network of places that can be discovered by three water taxis, which are free to use.
Rail access to the lake has also been improved this year, with TER regional trains offering three return trips between Limoges and Vassivière each day (costing 5 euro), and an extended service from Eymoutiers to Vassivière (2 euros).
Amongst other developments, the walking paths around the lake have been improved, and a new footbridge will allow walkers access to the island of Vauveix and its wild landscapes. A new naturist campsite opens for business at Maillereau, on the Presqu'Ile de Chassagnas, and the beaches at Auphelles and Broussas have had new play areas installed, with a free wooden castle to amuse the children at Broussas.
See the official website for full details of facilities and opening times.
