Description:
A new form of crime is worrying police in Limoges, with young people throwing themselves under cars in an attempt to extort money from unsuspecting drivers.
One such scam has which been repeatedly reported to Police, is where three youngsters (aged 9, 11 and 12) work together to con the driver. Incidents have taken place near the Champ-de-Juillet, where one of the group runs out in front of the vehicle, so the driver is unable to avoid him, making light contact. His two friends then confront the driver, and they demand money as compensation, so they do not tell their parents.
In a separate scam, an empty pushchair is placed behind a reversing car in the blind-spot area, so that the reversing vehicle hits it. When the driver gets out, a woman looking shocked with a baby in her arms tries to make the driver feel guilty, and asks for money.
Police are asking people to be vigilant, and if they observe one of these false accidents or are caught up in one, to dial 17 and report it. Typically, the scammers select their victims, choosing saloon cars driven by older people.
